Promenade returns to the beautiful grounds of Traquair House in June 2022, with our delayed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tom Hudson will be directing the play and the dates are 1-4 and 8-11 June, with the performances starting at 7.30 pm.
Shakespeare at Traquair has fingers and toes crossed that it will be “third time lucky” this year for their promenade performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the idyllic grounds of Traquair House, Innerleithen. With the 2020 and 2021 attempts hitting the skids due to the dreaded Covid, the company are now working flat out to deliver a show to remember once the opening night arrives on 1st June accompanied, naturally, with sun dappled skies and temperatures in the low twenties.
For founder Richard Nisbet (who is also helping to direct this year), this is a poignant moment. “Dream was the first show we delivered back in 1995”, he commented, adding that “When I started this group all those years ago, I little thought it would grow so much! We now have a regular cast and crew of over fifty people with a wonderful blend of youthful enthusiasm and experienced performers.”
The “Dream” plot hasn’t changed a lot in the last four centuries but for those that need a reminder, it’s got all the usual comedic Shakespearian elements – unrequited lovers, potions in the wrong eyes, interfering fairies, mischievous pranksters and a bunch of mechanicals who’ve never knowingly underacted. Throw in that essential soupçon of royalty, some chasing around the bushes and the inevitable happy ending where everyone gets married and you’ve got all the ingredients for an entertaining evening under the stars.
This year’s setting takes us back to the carefree, permissive 1960’s where just about everything that can hang out will be hanging out. Music buffs will delight in an eclectic selection of well-known hits sprinkled liberally across the production from the Shakespeare at Traquair house band. Costume afficionados will approve of the nod to Bill Gibb, that doyen of Scottish fashion designers from the 1960’s, fondly remembered for his unusual yet flattering designs. And for “Elvis spotters” it really will be a dream come true. So why not bring a picnic, bring a deck chair, bring plenty of warm and waterproof clothing and head on down to Traquair House Innerleithen for a night that will live long in the memory, hopefully for all the right reasons.
