Special Fundraiser for the Eastgate Theatre
Tuesday 24 June at 7.30pm
Shakespeare at Traquair was formed in 1995 by Richard Nisbet, Flora Maxwell Stuart and Judy Steel. It was part of a fundraising campaign to open an arts centre in Peebles (initially ‘Under One Roof’) and since realised with the opening of the Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre in March 2004.
Traquair Community Choir, now in its eleventh year, perform twice a year and is open to anybody who simply loves to sing. This year they performed a fringe concert as part of Shakespeare at Traquair in Traquair House Chapel with a repertoire of songs with text by Shakespeare and songs inspired by Shakespeare.
On Tuesday 24 June at The Eastgate, the choir’s programme of songs will be interspersed with excerpts from some of Shakespeare’s better known plays and sonnets, chosen to accompany the songs and performed by members of Shakespeare at Traquair. Expect to hear and see pieces from As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and from Shakespeare at Traquair’s current production, Macbeth. Performers include various Shakespeare at Traquair stalwarts you’ll recognise from bringing to life some of the Bard’s greatest characters such as Hamlet, Richard III, Oberon, Shylock and Macbeth. The programme will be rounded off with a selection of some of Shakespeare’s sonnets.
